Educational Amber Workshop with Eryk Popkiewicz!
We invite you to an educational workshop inspired by a medieval amber craftsman’s workshop, led by Eryk Popkiewicz – archaeologist, amber craftsman, and member of the International Amber Association.
During this unique, hands-on workshop, participants will have the opportunity to discover the secrets of working with amber using replicas of medieval tools. The session is conducted in an interactive format, combining practical skills with fascinating stories about the history, myths, and techniques of amber craftsmanship in the Middle Ages.
During the workshop, participants will learn:
What types of jewelry were worn in medieval times and the materials used
How amber was crafted and shaped in the Middle Ages
The myths, beliefs, and legends surrounding amber
The origins of amber and how it was collected and processed
The practical part includes:
Drilling holes in amber using a medieval hand drill (furkadełko)
Cutting amber with thread
Shaping amber pieces with files and small knives
Smoothing the surface using horsetail plant
Polishing with felt, leather, and wood
